“It’s time to put your health first. No matter your health, physical ability, age, or background, fitness improves your quality of life. Fitness is Essential” – Fitness is Essential Organization1
Fitness has become ubiquitous due to the growing awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, the shift in societal attitudes towards fitness, and the growth of the fitness industry. Despite the fact that there has been a favorable shift in the fitness sector, people are also becoming more and more concerned with their health because of the rise in chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity, in addition to the urgency created by the pandemic.
According to American Action Forum’s Research, it has been found that about half of Americans live with at least one chronic disease, and is expected to rise over time. (Hayes, Gillian, 2020, AmericanActionForum.org)2 Additionally, chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States and are responsible for seven out of every ten deaths, killing more than 1.7 million Americans every year. (FightChronicDisease.org)3 Among these, it was found that heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States and are also the leading drivers of the nation’s $4.1 trillion in annual healthcare costs. (CDC.gov)4 Fortunately, it was found that regular exercise can aid in preventing, treating, and managing these illnesses. Incorporating exercise can help lower the likelihood of developing chronic diseases and is recommended for individuals who are already dealing with these disorders to manage them.
Last February 22, the Community Gyms Coalition set an urgency on the subject of fitness and health because of this reality, among other things. This organization was then compelled to launch the Fitness is Essential Campaign as a result of the worrying increase in health problems. The Fitness is Essential Campaign, in partnership with the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, is an initiative that aims to promote the importance of physical fitness for overall health and well-being.The campaign is designed to encourage people of all ages to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, including regular exercise, nutritious eating, and adequate rest. The group aims to raise awareness about chronic illness prevention and to establish a healthy routine for everyone, in addition to addressing the decreased physical activity of individuals and the worsened health as a result of the pandemic.
The Community Gyms Coalition is made up of 15,000 community gyms and fitness centers located all over the United States, including Anytime Fitness, CrossFit, and Planet Fitness, to name a few. These facilities serve more than 25 million members and have an effect on tens of millions of additional people. With this campaign, the members of CGC will promote wellness by offering access to gyms such as free day passes, consultations, and wellness checkups. They will also use their platform to inform local leaders and legislators about what may be done to promote physical activity and fitness in neighborhoods around the nation.
“Fitness is Essential is about joining forces to make it easier for Americans to get active, fit and healthy” said Dale King, owner of PSKC CrossFit in Portsmouth, Ohio. “More than 40 percent of American adults are obese and are at higher risk of developing chronic diseases. More than 1 in 4 Americans are living with a mental illness. These can seem like overwhelming issues that don’t have a one size fits all solution. But regular exercise has been irrefutably proven to help with a range of mental and physical conditions. It’s a surefire way of improving people’s lives.” (2023, PRNewsWire.com)5
In conclusion, the CGC’s Fitness is Essential Campaign is an important initiative that promotes the importance of physical fitness for overall health and well-being. With its focus on education, motivation, and practical tips, the campaign has helped to inspire many people to take action and improve their health and well-being.
