Most people assume cleaning is the same thing as disinfecting and sanitizing. That is not the case, here’s the difference:
- Cleaning – the physical process of removing dirt, germs, viruses, and bacteria through the process of scrubbing, washing, and rinsing with soap/detergent and water. This step doesn’t necessarily kill the germs, but by removing them from surfaces and objects (including skin), the risk of spreading infection is lowered.
- Disinfecting – using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces and objects. While it doesn’t necessarily clean or remove germs, it does kill germs. Disinfectants (commonly bleach or alcohol solutions) typically need to be left on surfaces and objects for an advised period of time to kill the germs.
- Sanitizing– lowering the number of of germs to a safe level, as advised by public health regulations. Sanitization protocols vary based on needs. Sanitizing can be achieved by cleaning, disinfecting, or both. Reducing the the number of germs instead of killing all of them (that includes good bacteria), is typically the way to go.
- Surface Protection…
In order to lessen the spread of bacteria, disease, and infection, you should both clean and disinfect. Each environment and circumstance has it’s own protocol for reducing the risk factors of getting a disease or virus. For example, fitness and household settings (such as public gyms, bathrooms and kitchens) prioritize sanitation as these environments frequent contamination.
An overwhelming amount of cleaning products have been made available due to COVID-19. It can be daunting to decide which products are the best for your health needs. Many products claim to kill diseases and viruses, but are they safe?
While removing germs from surfaces is great, protecting that surface from immediate recontamination is the future of proper sanitation! Premier Fitness Service has made the development of materials that not only sanitize surfaces but provide lasting protection long after application.
